The Major Problem Everyone's Missing in the Demi Lovato and Taylor Swift Feud
#[Besides the fact that it's no longer about Kesha.]
No one is calling out men.
Pop singer Kesha has been fighting her 6-album Sony contract so that she would never have to work with her producer and alleged rapist Luke “Dr. Luke” Gottwald again. Last Friday, New York Supreme Court Justice Shirley Kornreich refused to let Kesha walk away from her deal with Sony, claiming the corporation would suffer “irreparable harm” if she didn’t fulfill the terms, completely dismissing the irreparable harm working with her alleged rapist could do to Kesha.
Demi Lovato tweeted her support and prayers for Kesha, as well as her disappointment in “self-proclaimed feminists” who don’t speak out or take action for women’s rights. Most fans immediately recognized that she was calling out Taylor Swift, who had been silent on the Kesha case up to this point. Lovato had a point – it’s frustrating to see women benefit from feminism without visibly paying it forward. When Swift had the audacity to stand on a stage full of her male producers at the Grammy’s last week while simultaneously claiming credit and power for her own work, the visual didn’t match the message, even if the message was a salient one. Swift’s feminism often seems to benefit her directly—and other women if they’re worthy enough to be part of her clique—but fails to extend to people outside of her personal demographic.
